The Spiral Architecture

A grammar for how living systems stay coherent while their parts stay free.

The question

What underlying architecture allows a complex living system to remain coherent while its individual parts remain free?

The grammar

  1. Z — the Stillpoint
  2. Axis
  3. Relationship
  4. Emergence
  5. Form

The Spiral Framework is the Architecture written down: one question, and the grammar that answers it. Every living thing I have ever looked at closely — a person, a household, a company, a landscape, an economy — turns out to be organised the same way. There is a still point at the centre that does not move. There is an axis, a stable orientation that gives the whole thing a direction. Around that axis, relationships form, and out of those relationships, form emerges — a body, a building, an institution, a way of trading. The axis is stable. The form is free.

That last sentence is the whole framework in six words, and it is also the test. Something is still itself as long as its axis holds, however much its form changes; and it is already something else the moment its axis has gone, however familiar it still looks. The Framework is a way of seeing which is which. It is not a method, not a belief system, not a personality typology, not sacred geometry, not a claim about ancient sites, not a brand — and it is measured against one thing only, which is whether life gets more possible where it is applied.

“The axis is stable. The form is free.”

Six principles

  • The axis is stable. The form is free.
  • Life is the measure.
  • Coherence is not conformity.
  • Relationship precedes imposed structure.
  • Local autonomy and whole-system coherence can coexist.
  • Technology supports agency and relationship; it must not become sovereign.

What coherence means here

Coherence, as I use the word, is the state in which the parts of something remain fully themselves while taking part in a whole that works. It is not conformity, which asks the parts to become alike. It is not order, which can be imposed on anything, living or dead. It is not tidiness and it is not central control. You can see it in a family at dinner, in a team that has stopped performing for each other, in a piece of land that has been left alone long enough. The form is never the coherence; the relationship underneath the form is.

“Life is the measure.”
